Most of the world uses established formal education systems which employ the methodology of teaching by a trained professional. This mostly happens in schools where learners sit in a class and the teacher helps facilitate knowledge using a standardized curriculum.

This particular form of education is the same used across most of Africa as well. However, many can agree that the processes involved are either outdated or don’t work for everyone. A singular standardized format does not achieve the best results for everyone. As such, various individuals and organizations have come up with innovative ways in a bid to help achieve the best results for every student.

Some of these innovations include:

  • Music in learning.

Music has always been a huge part of African culture and it has been used in education even before formal education was introduced in Africa. It plays a key role in the process of learning as music has been concluded by numerous researchers to have a positive effect on the mind. Using it in learning therefore ensures better results as learners are able to learn better. Music also makes learning fun which also facilitates the process of learning as it ignites better involvement amongst learners. Furthermore, rhythm also attaches itself better to the mind and using music to teach technical aspects achieves better results as it helps learners understand better.

  • Using games in learning.

Play forms a huge part of childhood development. It allows children to develop their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Involving games in education very much helps achieve better results as it also keeps the learners more involved and interested. Some games that have been used in learning are puzzles and plays which have improved education for various people. More and more people are using games in education across Africa.

  • E-learning.

E-learning is a major emerging trend being employed all over the world, Africa inclusive. Using electronics and the internet has immensely improved the process of education for very many people. The internet has been a major source of information which is easily available in most areas. Use of computers and tablets is also very reliable because it makes sharing of content much easier and storage simpler than the use of text books and encyclopaedias. Previous researches that have been carried out have revealed that students who use tablets achieve better results than those who do not.

  • Hip Hop in maths.

A teacher in South Africa has been using hip hop to teach maths. Kurt Minnaar, a former hip-hop dancer, and choreographer has creatively come up with a system of turning maths concepts and numbers into hip-hop lyrics. This has helped his grade 8 students learn better as it also involves them like other forms of music would. It has also made learning fun which also achieves better results.

  • Use of objects.

The learning systems we have are greatly audio visual. A teacher comes to class and talks and/or writes on the board for the period of the lesson and leaves. However, some have used objects which have made it easier to learn. The objects can be as simple as the small sticks we were told to collect as kids for use during mathematics. Our teacher required us to have at least ten small sticks in class one so when we did addition or subtraction, we clearly saw how the answer came about and we understood the concept. Some teachers have also constructed simple colourful objects using cardboards or soap to represent various things. Colours have been known to stimulate the mind and this also just helps facilitate learning.

  • Inception of competitive fairs and projects.

Many schools have adopted competitions where students come up with creative projects and ideas and they develop and present them. This has greatly improved innovation and invention among students. This has prompted free creative thinking amongst learners and combined with the research they have to do in the process of development, they achieve better results.

There are many other forms of innovations in education. These have helped many students across the continent get the best out of their education system. It is recommendable for more people to come up with innovative ways in learning because this is a proven way to achieve better results for more learners. Innovations in education are very important as they suit more learners than the standardized education systems.
