4th of December, 2019.

The 16 days of activism is a period between November 25th (The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and December 10th (The Human Rights Day). This period focuses on campaigns against gender-based violence and unites human rights activists, governments and other institutions from all over the world in working together to achieve a common goal.

This year, the Somaliland Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and family and the Somaliland Human Rights Commission in partnership with The CARROT Co.  plus other partners have harmonized their effort in support of women and girls in ending gender-based violence and female genital mutilation in the entire Somali region. In championing this, there are several events that has been curated daily to address specific thematic areas between the 25th of December and 10th of December including; Gender-based violence, Rape, HIV/AIDS, Human & Women Rights, and Female Genital Mutilation.

The Somali tradition records the highest practice of FGM. Due to this alarming record, we are bringing together culture practitioners, religious leaders, policy makers, educators and historians, youth,  civil society, state and non-state actors – with a deliberate representation of women and girls.

Since the start of the campaign #16daysOfActivism we have experienced, considerably, the increasing number of new voices that are emerging both offline and online sharing their stories and calling for the end of this horrible inhumane practices at home and abroad.

We are therefore calling on our friends in the media, colleagues, partners, concerned world leaders, citizens of Africa and the diaspora community to support our on-going campaign that is currently on-going in Hargesya, Somaliland to ensure our collective voice does not sink in this digital ocean.
